Stephen Edwards, Executive Director of South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), has recently been named the new Chair of the Urban Transport Group (UTG). Here, we quiz him on where he’ll specialize in his new function: connecting delivery services, operating as a collective with other institution contributors, and more.
Five matters of specific importance to me largely overlap with UTG’s priorities. Firstly, the bus network and its sustainability—particularly the problem of patronage decline—are symbiotic. As patronage falls, the community’s financial viability reduces, often leading to provider provision reductions, making the network much less attractive. This is a trend we see across the United Kingdom.
The following factor is a long-term sustainable investment in shipping. Infrastructure investment entails complicated initiatives with long transport times. Having certainty over future investment availability allows decision-makers to plan and implement the right projects to fit work to the investment available.
